Libya’s recently re-elected president of the High Council of State (HCS) Khalid Al-Mishri has denied throwing a lavish wedding for his son when the nation is in the grip of a Covid-19 catastrophe.

The chairman of the HCS said in a statement on his official Facebook page that the vehicle seen with his son during the celebration was loaned from a friend.

Al-Mishri expressed his sincere congratulations to his son for the marriage, adding that his son had suffered without a father for six years because he was born four months after the chairman was wrongfully imprisoned.

“In accordance with the regulations and the lockdown, we conducted the wedding in the middle of a modest family gathering and without any invites to any non-family.” The Chairman asserted, adding that those invited followed Covid-19 procedures and kept a socially sufficient distance.

Al-Mishri’s statement comes after a backlash arose after the circulation of wedding photos and accusations that the chairman and his family broke all Covid-19 regulations by throwing a massive wedding at a time when other Libyans were unable to conduct funerals or see their loved ones.
