Libyan Parliament welcomes long awaited reopening of the coastal road

The National Defence and Security Committee of the Libyan Parliament hailed the opening of the coastal route, which enables travel between the country’s east and west and alleviates people’ hardship.

The Committee, in a statement issued in Tripoli and reported by the Libyan News Agency, emphasized the importance of completing the remaining provisions of the ceasefire agreement signed in Geneva on 23 October 2020, particularly the exchange of detainees and the removal of mercenaries, as well as taking the agreed-upon measures to ensure that the flow of oil continues unabated.

In its statement, the Committee urged the Presidential Council, as Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Army, to immediately begin military unification in accordance with the provisions of Act No. 11 of 2012 on the establishment of the powers of the army’s command levels, and to take deterrent action against military personnel who interfere in political affairs.

The Libyan Parliament’s Committee on Defence and National Security ended its statement by emphasizing the need of the sponsors of the ceasefire agreement to take the appropriate actions and penalties against anybody who violates the provisions of the accord.
