The US is hopeful that Libyan elections will be held on time
The US's Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs expressed his government's optimism that Libya's national elections will take place on time
Joey Hood, the United States’ Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, said that the US is optimistic that the Libyan elections would be conducted on schedule, in December, in accordance with the roadmap and Security Council decision.
“US officials spoke with various parties at the Berlin Conference and the United Nations (UN) to guarantee that the elections are conducted on time,” Hood stated.
In an interview, Hood said that elections are required “to fulfil the aspirations of the Libyan people in an elected administration that represents the whole population and is capable of uniting the army and protecting all borders.”
“Discussions on the withdrawal of foreign troops from Libya are still underway, and everyone recognizes that the Libyan people want to reclaim their country’s sovereignty,” he said.
Hood emphasized the necessity of removing foreign troops from Libya as quickly as possible in order to reestablish Libyan sovereignty and preserve the Libyan people’s freedom to choose.
“With the withdrawal of foreign troops, Libyans will be free to decide their destiny, and the international community will be able to assist them in rebuilding their country,” he said.
