Mohamed Al-Manfi, President of the Presidential Council, met today with Fathi Bashagha, former Interior Minister of Libya’s previous Government of National Accord (GNA).

The meeting was held to discuss upcoming elections and sovereign positions, according to the Council Information Office.

The former Minister praised the Presidential Council’s work in addressing institutional divisions and their crucial role in establishing a Commission for National Reconciliation, which would serve as a starting point and basis for reunification and bringing Libyan partisans from all regions and cities together.

In turn, the President of the Presidential Council reaffirmed his commitment to holding elections at the end of December this year, as well as to support the work of the Joint Military Commission 5 + 5, the ceasefire, and institutional unification.

Bashagha was appointed Minister of Interior of the Government of National Accord (GNA) by previous Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj in 2018 and served in the position until the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Geneva elected the Government of National Unity in February of this year.

According to Reuters, Libya’s former Interior Minister has hired the Denver-based law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck to lobby for him in the country’s upcoming national elections.

According to the records, the $50,000 monthly contract between the US Firm and Bashagha did not specify the scope of the work to be done, other than stating that they would help promote fair elections in Libya and support anti-corruption efforts in the North African country.

The former Minister has been widely reported as a possible candidate for Libya’s upcoming presidential election, which will take place on December 24th.
