GNU adopts the the procedures for Libya’s accession to the Paris Climate Agreement

During his participation in the World Environment Day celebration, the Head of Government gave a statement emphasizing that World Environment Day was a global alarm to rouse conscience and motivate action to conserve the environment.

“On this occasion, we renew our interest in the concerns of the global environment and share the world’s concern over the increasing environmental pressure and natural resources,” the Libyan Prime Minister said, according to the Government Information Office.

It stated that Libya, due to its geographical location and development status, is one of the countries most affected by the adverse effects of current and projected future climate changes, noting that “the frequency of droughts, heatwaves, sandstorms, water scarcity, desensitization, and desertification that we are experiencing today is the best evidence.”

The Head of Government emphasized that the GNU’s attention was focused on the issue of climate change adaptation and encouraged developed countries to fulfill their commitments under the agreement on financing, capacity-building, and technical transfer so that all parties could play their role in efforts to mitigate climate change.

During the event, a visual presentation detailing the Ministry of Environment’s objectives and efforts was held, as well as two other presentations, one on the environmental repercussions of pollution and the other on the Paris Convention on Climate Change.

Members of the House of Representatives and the State, Ministers of the Environment, Oil and Gas, Water Resources, Industry and Minerals, Civil Service, State Liaison and Political Affairs, State President and Cabinet of Ministers of the Government of National Unity, as well as the diplomatic corps of Ambassadors from Austria, France, Egypt, Sudan, Niger, Tunisia, and Palestine, attended the ceremony.

The Paris Agreement (French: Accord de Paris, or Cob2) is the first global climate agreement, resulting from discussions at the United Nations 21st Conference on Climate Change in Paris in 2015.

The Agreement aspires to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius and to restrict it to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
