US & UN condemn terror attack in Sabha, calls for urgency in unifying Libyan military institutions
The United Nations and the United States reiterate the call to unify the country's military institutions and warn against the mobility of terrorist groups working to undermine Libya's stability
The United Nations Mission in Libya condemns the terrorist attack claimed by ISIS this week in Sebha, which killed a number of military officers and injured others, according to local authorities.
Ján Kubi, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Libya and Chief of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), extended his heartfelt condolences to the relatives of the victims and wishes the injured a swift recovery.
“This serves as a stark warning that the increased mobility of dangerous elements and terrorists only serves to increase the risk of future instability and insecurity in Libya and the region,” Special Envoy Kubi said. “We renew our appeal for an immediate start to the process of unifying Libya’s military and security institutions in order to strengthen border security and combat the threat of terrorism and criminal activity.”
Similarly, the US denounced the attack in Sebha that killed the two Criminal Investigation Division officers, Captain Ibrahim Abdel Nabi Mana’ Khayali and Lieutenant Abbas Abubakr Ali Asherif.
The US Embassy noted in a statement on its website that there are still groups aiming to undermine Libya’s stability and unity. They reiterated their commitment to cooperate with those committed to transforming Libya into a more peaceful and prosperous future, notably by conducting elections in December, integrating the country’s institutions, combating terrorism, and ensuring full implementation of the ceasefire accord.
