The US urges for further support for Libya’s stabilization
The US Ambassador Richard Norland emphasized the importance of a competent government in order to preserve Libya's economy and the need for great international support
The US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland said that during his recent visit to the capital, he found Tripoli to be a vibrant and pleasant city.
Ambassador Norland stated in an interview with the Egyptian station Extra News that Egypt was instrumental in facilitating the political process in Libya, noting that Cairo had reopened its mission in Tripoli.
He noted that sustaining Libya’s economy requires a strong administration capable of managing its resources and emphasized the need of providing diplomatic and political support for all Libyan parties’ efforts.
The US Ambassador stated that the Libyan people demand an end to power outages and a more effective response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
He highlighted that there are expectations on the Government of National Unity (GNU) to deliver services, considering Libya’s natural resource wealth and the country’s $45 billion USD in frozen assets awaiting release.
According to the US ambassador, “Libya’s blocked money are awaiting release… and we will give political support.”
Norland stated that he addressed the constitutional and legal grounds for the elections set for 24 December with Libyan Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh, adding that “we would back the Libyans’ determination to expel foreign combatants.”
