Trump is bent on building the US-Mexico border wall before the election
White House advisor Stephen Miller said that US president Donald Trump’s announcement of a state of emergency could allow hundreds of miles to be built from the border wall with Mexico before the elections in 2020.
“We expect to build hundreds of miles, maybe 200 miles by September 2020, two months before the presidential election,” Miller said in a press statement.
“You can’t have areas on the border that are not controlled or unlocked so people can flow through them without monitoring them,” he said.
The US president has stressed his intention to exploit the issue of the wall in his campaign for re-election, despite criticism from Democrats, rights groups, landowners at the border, and many senior Republican members of Congress.
Trump also signed the decision to declare a national emergency, an extraordinary measure to finance the wall on the border with Mexico, after Congress approved only a quarter of the amount demanded the construction of the wall of 5.7 billion dollars.
