Italian Defense Minister arrives in Tripoli to review migration crisis

Italian Defense Minister Elisabetta Trenta on Tuesday told her Libyan counterpart Najim Owida shortly after her arrival in Tripoli that it is necessary to ”stop human trafficking and irregular immigration”. The minister stressed that Italy will ”continue to be beside Libya” and is ready to intensify efforts ”according to need and the necessities of the Libyan people”.

”We share the same home with Libya, the Mediterranean – added the defense minister – and Italy wants to do more for the stability of the region and the country”. But the two countries also share the problem of immigration and for this, added the minister, ”Italy needs to intensify its efforts”.

”We are very happy to have you here – stressed Minister Owida – with Italy we have important historic relations on which we need to all invest for the stability of the Mediterranean”.

Minister Trenta traveled to Tripoli aboard a C130 of the Italian air force with defense chief of staff, Gen. Claudio Graziano.
