Daily Mail: Britain mulling over sending anti-terror troops to Libya

Britain could send troops to Libya to train anti-terror forces to fight Islamic State after a request from the country’s military, Daily Mail reported on Monday.

The commander of the UN-backed government’s counter-terrorism force said he had asked for help to teach a specialist unit new skills to combat jihadists amid fears the militants are trying to regroup.

Major General Mohamed Al-Zain said his preference was for the training to take place inside Libya, not in Britain, according to the Daily Mail.

British defence sources said they had yet to have the request passed to them but would consider it – and they believed training inside Libya was possible.

General Al-Zain’s comments come weeks after he met the UK’s ambassador to Libya, Frank Baker, where they discussed building closer ties.

Talks are also underway to re-establish a British embassy in the war-ravaged country in the coming months, diplomatic sources in London said.
