Exclusive: US rejects France’s push for elections in Libya

A high-ranking western source disclosed to Ean Libya that a meeting was held in London last week and was attended by US, French. Italian and British delegates in addition to the UN delegate to Libya, Ghassan Salame, and UAE as well as Egyptian delegates, to discuss Libyan issues.

The source added that the meeting resulted in an agreement to hold parliamentary elections in Libya before the end of 2018 as it would be difficult to have a referendum in east Libya.

The source also said that France, from under the table, passed an agenda that urges for presidential and parliamentary elections without adopting the constitution.

Khalifa Haftar, Fades Al-Sirraj, Khalid Al-Mishri, and Aqilah Saleh, were also invited to be part of the meeting’s results in a second meeting that could be held this week, the source added.

Meanwhile, the source said that the US has rejected the French urge for elections in Libya.
