Libya human rights body: 433 people killed in Libya in 2017

433 people were killed in Libya in 2017, the National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) has reported today.

The reported issued on the first day of the year said that the 433 people included 79 children and 10 women, adding that 201 extrajudicial killings took place in different parts of the country such as Benghazi, Tripoli, Sabha, Al-Khums, Tarhouna, Grabulli, Al-Zawiya and other areas like Al-Abyar and Wershiffana as well as Barak Al-Shatti in southern Libya, particularly by armed groups, the report said.

“157 civilians were killed by landmines in Benghazi, Sirte and Derna, while 143 people were arbitrarily arrested and 186 others were kidnapped during the same period in the year 2017 in different cities across Libya.” The NCHRL’s report indicated.

It also explained that there were in 2017 15 attacks on health facilities in several Libyan cities, which threatened lives of doctors and patients of the fragile health care system.

The NCHRL also documented 34 cases of illegal detention, torture and threats against journalists and human rights activists.

“There are 3.5 million people in Libya suffer poor living conditions and almost 400,000 people are internally displaces.” It added.

According to the report, political fragmentation, poor economic conditions and escalating violence as well as random clashes in Libya have worsened the crisis in the country.
