Election of new central bank governor slammed as illegal by Libyan officials
The appointment of a new governor for the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) by the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR) has been slammed as against the law by several Libyan officials.
The Head of the High Council of State (HCS) Abdelrahman Al-Sweihli has considered electing Mohammad Al-Shukri as a governor for the CBL an illegal act by the HoR.
Al-Sweihli tweeted Tuesday evening that the HoR’s appointment is invalid as it goes against the Libyan Political Agreement’s (LPA) Article 15, which says the HoR and the HCS should together select the appointees of sovereign positions in Libya.
“This has been a unilateral act and it is illegal.” Al-Sweihli explained.
Meanwhile, the Governor of the CBL in Tripoli Al-Siddiq Al-Kabeer has issued a statement rejecting the appointment of the HoR for a new governor, saying it is illegal and against the LPA.
Tuesday noon saw the appointment of a new governor for the CBL named Mohammed Al-Shukri by 54 votes at the Tobruk-based HoR.
