UN envoy to Libya says at least 365 Libyans killed or injured in 2017

The UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, said that indiscriminate fighting in residential areas, air strikes and explosive ordnance resulted in the death or injury of at least 365 Libyans, 79 of whom are children.

In a statement on the World Human Rights Day, Salame said that Libya is witnessing “human rights violations” on an alarming scale, with no accountability or legal procedures conducted, pointing to the difficult security conditions experienced by doctors, patients and the fragile health care system, In light of the attack on 14 health facilities this year.

In addition, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has documented “24 cases of abuse, arbitrary or unlawful detention, torture and threats against journalists, activists and others,” according to the statement published on the UNSMIL website.

Salame also said that “201 unlawful killings”, particularly executions of persons held by armed groups, were documented.

The UN kicked off Sunday a year-long campaign to honor the foundational human rights document, which next year marks its 70th anniversary.
