Iranian current President Hassan Rouhani elected for new four years
Iranian state television has congratulated President Hassan Rouhani on his reelection to a new four-year term, with preliminary results pointing to an outright victory over conservative challenger Ebrahim Raisi and two other candidates.
With nearly all votes counted, Rouhani, an establishment veteran and relative moderate, received about 22.8 million votes — or more than half of those cast, an Interior Ministry spokesman announced earlier on May 20.
Conservative former prosecutor Ebrahim Raisi won 15.5 million votes, while the other two candidates did not break through the 1-million-vote mark.
Officials said more than 40 million Iranians voted in the May 19 election — a turnout of more than 70 percent, roughly similar to the showing in the 2013 elections.
Analysts have consistently suggested that a higher turnout was likely to favor Rouhani.
