Tripoli International Airport to reopen Thursday
The Tripoli International Airport is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, sources from the National Salvation Government (NSG) of Khalifa Al-Ghweil reported.
According to the sources, the NSG will hold the reopening ceremony on Thursday one day before the sixth anniversary of the 17 February revolution that saw Libyans kill the long-time dictator Mumamr Gaddafi.
Work at the Tripoli International Airport started late last year by local and Turkish companies contracted by the rival government of Al-Ghweil, which is at political war with the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) based in Tripoli.
The Tripoli International Airport was closed in July 2014 following severe and ferocious clashes inside and outside of it between forces from Zintan city, who were controlling the airport security, and forces from Libyan Dawn (Fajr Libya) who came to drive the Zintanis out of Tripoli because of their looting and robbery as well as criminal acts, according to Libya Dawn officials at the time.
During the 2014 clashes, large parts of the airport were destroyed in addition to the burning of a couple of planes.
Libya has been using Mitiga Airport in Tripoli as the main flights receiver and dispatcher since September 2014.
