US concerned over forming Libyan National Guard, says it could destabilize Libya
The US State Department’s Acting spokesman, Mark Toner, said his country is deeply concerned about the massive number of military vehicles that have been paraded in Tripoli on Thursday as part of the a formation of a new military group, called “The Libyan National Guard” (LNG).
In a Friday statement, Toner said the entry of this new group with that amount of weaponry could escalate the crisis in Libya and the capital in particular, adding that it also could destabilize the already fragile and shaky security in Tripoli.
“Libya should work on building a united national military force under a civilian command so that it becomes able to secure all of the country from any terrorist threats.” Toner added.
He also indicated that the political fragmentation and the lack of coordination among the many military factions in Libya will only be beneficial for the IS terror groups as well as any other extremists, who are doing all they they could so that they can use up Libya’s territories and resources.
“The US supports the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and backs up all the country’s efforts to strike a comprehensive national reconciliation, as the GNA continues to overcome economic ans security obstacles in Libya.” Toner indicated.
He concluded his statement by urging Libyans to back up the GNA as it works effortlessly to supervise a peaceful transition to anew government via democratic elections, pointing out that all Libyan factions must resort to peaceful dialogue in reconstructing their country.
