Doctors Without Borders slams EU-Libya migrants deal as “madness”
The Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has said that the deal reached by the European Union’s leader with Libya on Friday regarding curbing the influx of migrants to Europe via Libya is going to worsen the situation rather than resolve it.
The EU said it would allocate funds that would be given to local communities in Libya “to improve their situation, and help them shelter stranded migrants,” The European Council president, Donald Tusk, said.
“We have agreed on immediate operational measures that should help reduce the number of irregular migrants and save lives at the same time.” Tusk was reported as saying.
However, according to MSF, the move of the EU to create refugee camps in Libya for African migrants is “madness and delusional.”
“Libya is currently a lawless state where migrants are starved, beaten and forced into slavery, and that the situation “will not be fixed with some training and some cash”.” added MSF, as part of a number of tweets it posted on the matter.
