Under the theme of ‘Discussing the Competencies of the Women’s Empowerment Unit under the Presidency Council,’ representatives of Libyan womengroups and women activists from diverse backgrounds representing all areas of Libya opened today a three-day meeting in the Tunisian capital. First deputy President of the House of Representatives (HoR) Mouhammad Shoueib and HoR member for Sabratah Almabrouk Al-Khattabi, attended the meeting, listening to participants’ views and showing solidarity with their demands.

Addressing the opening session, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Martin Kobler said: “The role of the women in peace and security is of utmost importance. Women make up half of the society, but they are the most to suffer. Their sons are dying every day in battles, their families are torn apart by conflict and their personal safety is compromised by the continuing senseless violence and lawlessness.”

“It is imperative that Libyan women play a principal role at this important juncture in Libya’s history. For this you have my full and unwavering support. It will not only advance your participation in state building but it will also bring enormous benefits to Libya,” SRSG Kobler added.

He said that he will submit four requests to the Presidency Council and the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord to advocate how to bring the Libyan women into important positions:

  1. Women should have 30 percent quota in the Government of National Accord;
  2. To establish the Women’s Empowerment Unit under the Presidency Council as soon as possible;
  3. Women should have adequate representation in all the committees under the Libyan Political Agreement;
  4. Women should have a focal point in the Presidency Council
