England and Russia draw 1-1, threatened with expulsion over fans clashes
As the Euro 2016 match between England and Russia finally kicked off on Saturday night, it appeared as if three days of intermittent soccer-related violence in this city had come to an end. But in the final minutes of the game, the tension between rival fans boiled over again.
The disturbance began when, from the area of the stadium reserved for Russia’s fans, banned flares were set off, with one launching onto the field. Moments later, a loud explosion sounded from the Russian fans’ section behind the England goal.
Amid the confusion, the overmatched Russian side had scored a last-minute equalizer to snatch a 1-1 draw.
Moments later, after the referee blew the final whistle, Russian fans spilled out of their section and moved through the stands toward the rival English section. Brawls then broke out between the two groups while stewards attempted to reign in the chaos.
