59 municipalities to hold elections in January
Libya will hold municipal elections for 59 municipalities on January 1, 2025, the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced Sunday.
These elections will be for councils whose terms have expired, including newly formed steering councils.
The HNEC has called on the General Administration to prepare detailed plans for the elections, ensuring adequate staffing, resources, and financial coverage for electoral offices.
In September, the HNEC outlined the electoral system for these councils. Councils for municipalities with a population of 25,000 or less will have seven members:
- Five members will be elected through a list-based system:
- Three general seats
- One seat reserved for women
- One seat reserved for individuals with disabilities
- Two members will be elected as independent candidates.
